How it Started
In the beginning our goal was simple. Send a postcard to my mother every day. Stay connected. We gave very little thought to how long we might be doing it.
After a few days I started to run low on the commercially printed postcards I had collected on my travels, so I began making my own postcards.
My husband joined in the fun, and we have been creating a custom postcard from our own photographs and original illustrations every day since March 2020.
Over the last 1,700+ days of creating an original postcard, an evolution has been occurring. It is an ongoing challenge to create interesting content every day, and I have been inspired to create more original art. Here is a collection of some of our favorite illustrations.
About Kari Auringer
I knew art was going to be a part of my life when I was 5 years old, but I was not sure how.
That desire was fueled when I was able to take art classes in elementary school, and in high school I luckily had one of those nurturing teachers that cared about me and helped me embrace my love of making art. I took a huge leap when I enrolled in college and focused on a degree in graphic design. That was the springboard to a career in marketing that saw me work for large companies, start my own company, and eventually become immersed in advertising, marketing and design.
I took a bit of a detour when I fell in love with wine and decided to try my hand at winemaking. I used my marketing career to land a job in the Bay Area and eventually transitioned into studying winemaking and viticulture. 20 years later I am still crafting wine as my career, but a funny thing happened when Covid hit. I re-discovered how much fun art supplies could be, and it rekindled that love of creating art. I have always been an art lover, going to museums, galleries, and shows on a regular basis. But making my own art again brought a sense of pride and accomplishment I had not felt in decades. I started out doodling, then serious drawing, and before I knew it, I was exploring linocuts and copper plate etching. Soon after I owned my own etching press. The world of art stands before me full of endless possibilities I cannot wait to explore.
